Corona brewer, Grupo Modelo, has sued its U.S. Partner, Constellation Brands. The suit was filed in New York on December 15. Grupo Modelo claims that Constellation directors on the board of their joint venture marketing firm, Crown Imports, voted to reject the proposed advertising budget for 2010 even though they knew it would harm sales and Modelo. Modelo is coming off its third straight year of sales declines in the U.S. caused by competition and the down economy. Modelo claims a vigorous ad program is needed. 2009 sales were down 8%. Crown Imports provides 28% of Constellations profits. Anheuser-Busch Inbev owns 50% of Grupo Modelo. If it isn't settled this case could go on until the marketing contract ends in 2016.

Red wine could improve women's sex lives. A study released by the Journal of Sexual Medicine showed that women who drank one or two glasses of red wine a day enjoyed sex more than non-drinkers. Italian scientists studied 800 women between the ages of 18 and 50 in Florence Italy. The women filled out a questionnaire called the Female Sexual Function Index. The highest possible score is 36 points. Average scores showed women drinking 2 glasses a day scored 27.3 points, one glass a day 25.9 points, and non-drinkers 24.4 points.

Merchandising opportunities

February 14 Valentines Day. What sells. Candy, Chocolates, Wines, Rose wine', Gift items, Valentine cards. Get your displays up early for best sales.

February 15 Presidents Day. What kind of promotions work. When I was in retail, I ran successful promotions tying in with Washington's Birthday. Apicture of George with ads and displays of cherry flavored products caught the customers eye. Cherry Brandy, Cherry Wine, Chocolate covered cherries. Why do it? Two reasons. It keeps customer interest up and it makes extra sales. Extra sales make extra profits and that why you are in business.
